Artist Statement For my art piece, I wanted to represent the beautiful relationship between humans and nature. I thought a raw heart would represent the human aspect of my art piece fully because significant changes can happen within our hearts. In my essay, I briefly described how I believe we should revamp our ways, and allow nature to return to its natural state. To create contrast, I sketched the heart in black and white to represent humans, and then cut out colorful flowers from a magazine to signify nature. I wanted there to be a contrast between the human and nature aspects of my project, but to also reveal the great beauty when blended together.
Initially, I wanted to take photographs of our intricate relationship with nature. However, my vision did not play out and I had to make major adjustments to my art piece. I decided to stick with drawing, but added an edge to my art by decorating the sketched part with cut outs from a magazine.
When I realized my photography vision was not going to work, I googled “human and nature artwork.” I found some creations that were exactly what I was aiming for. All of the artwork exhibited a skeleton, or an identifiable muscle. The artwork was exactly what I was looking for because delicate flowers were growing out of the human portions of the art-pieces. Here is a link to some of the other pictures that inspired me.
