El Periodismo Project Reflection
For this project we worked in groups to create a newspaper or video about a spanish speaking country of our choice. The group I was in decided to create a video about Venezuela. For the fist portion of our project, we had to individually write about the pop culture or current events taking place in Venezuela or we had the option to create an ad about Venezuela. I decided to write about current events taking place in Venezuela and wrote an article about a Miami Herald reporter who was held captive in Venezuela for a few days. For the second part of our project, we had to work as a team and create our video. The video we created was like a newsroom and each of us talked about the topic we chose to wrote about.
I connected to this project because I was very interested in the topic I chose to write about and I love learning about different countries! Venezuela is one of my favorite spanish speaking countries because it so beautiful. Other than knowing Venezuela is absolutely gorgeous, I wasn't aware of the current events taking place in Venezuela. By doing this project, I learned so much about Venezuela and I really enjoyed doing the research.
When writing my article, you could say I probably bit off more than I could chew. I learned so much about the topic I was researching and I had a ton information so my article was really long. I struggle with spanish and I had to work really hard in order to write my article. However, I was really proud with my final piece and seeing my article come together was the best part for me.
Other than writing my article, another difficult part of this project for me was reading my article out loud when we filmed our video. I am in the silent period with spanish right now and I really do not like to speak spanish out loud. However, I had to speak in spanish for our video. In order to do so, I rehearsed my script a lot and worked on my pronunciation to feel confident when speaking in spanish.
By doing this project, I learned I am capable of much more than I think I can do. Even though I had to work hard in order to write my article and I had to rehearse a lot in order to feel confident when speaking in Spanish, I knew a lot more about writing in Spanish and speaking in spanish than I thought I did. I always think I can do less than I actually can, and it's nice to do projects like this that help improve your confidence about a subject that doesn't come naturally.
The knowledge that we have gained from doing this project is a valuable part of the language learning experience because it immerses us in the culture of spanish speaking countries. I feel like in order to truly learn about something, you must experience it first hand. I feel like it is important for us to learn about the countries where spanish is spoken. Overall this was an interesting project and I enjoyed learning about Venezuela!
