For this project, our goal was to identify our sense of place as well as our environmental ethic. While identifying our sense of place and environmental ethic, we also wanted to learn about energy production and determine our stance on different types of energy to fuel our energy demands. We learned about several different types of environmental ethics leading up to our essays and we also read articles and excerpts from books to help us write our essays. One article that stood out to me was called, "Bakken Bussiness, " and we also read several excerpts from a few of Edward Abbey's books in order to identify grand style and his environmental ethic. The essays we wrote were more creative than factual so we did an inspiration journal to help our creative flow. We also had several guest speakers come in to inform us about different types of energy as well as different ways they are helping to preserve our environment.
Going into this project, I knew exactly what I wanted to write about. It was very easy for me to identify my sense of place, however, once I identified my sense of place, I really struggled to narrow down what I wanted to write about. I knew I wanted to write about Luray, Kansas, which is where my grandfather grew up. I've had to many wonderful memories and I wanted to write about all of my fun times, but I realized that by writing about those memories, it wasn't necessarily completing the task of our essays. I really had to persevere in order to incorporate all of the elements of our essays. In doing so, I just had to let myself write what came to mind, and then after I got everything down, I was able to refine.
I really enjoyed getting to write in the "Grand Style." By writing so elegantly, it didn't even feel like I was writing an essay. One of my favorite lines from my essay is, "As I watch the sun fade and burrow into the horizon, I take its lead and let myself fall into a deep slumber, like a ship giving up its fight against the relentless ocean, and gently sinking into the depths of the unknown." As far as my visual piece goes, I loved creating it. Finding inspirations from other artists really helped me out I was able to create a pretty neat and abstract piece of art.
I loved this project. I felt like what we learning in Chemistry perfectly complemented what we were learning in Humanities. It was really helpful to be able to learn about energy production in Chemistry and determine how we perceived energy production based on our environmental ethic. I thought it was really neat how we were able to write elegant yet accurate essays on our stance about different environmental issues.
