While interning at the Environmental Center, my main goal was to improve the recycling in the student union. In order to do so, I did several surveys and observations to figure out the reasons behind why the students weren't recycling as much as they should be and why they were contaminating the recycling bins when they were recycling. Using all of the information I gathered, I developed a plan to improve the recycling habits of the students in the student union. I realized that the signs located above the recycling bins do not have common items found in the student union located on them. Therefore, students have to guess whether or not their item is recyclable or not. Since the signage seemed to be one of the main areas of concern, I was able to modify one of the recycling bins in the student union. I'm hoping the modifications I made will help students know what to recycle. I added several visual aids to the sign and added a large sign above the recycling bin to make the location more apparent. I've created several graphs from the information I gathered from the survey I passed out and I also created a report. Along with modifying the sign above the recycling bin, I created an informative poster about recycling.
