Día de los Muertos
For this project we studied the Day of the Dead and we chose a family member to revolve our project around. We wrote two paragraphs in spanish describing the life of our family member and our favorite memory of them. We also created an art piece by creating a traditional Day of the Dead skull.

My grandfather was born on the 27 of October in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. When he was 17 years old he joined the Navy for four years. He moved to Denver, Colorado and married my grandmother in 1962. In 1963 he had my mother Jennifer, and in 1967 he had my uncle Dan. My grandfather liked to hunt with his two dogs, Sam and Pete. He also liked to fish and work on vehicles. He lost his battle with cancer at the age of 76 and he died en 2011 in Chadron Nebraska.
Gritaba y lloraba. Mi abuelo iniciaba a reír. Utilizaba su cuchillo y cortar mi cabeza fuera. Mi abuelo era un hombre de divertido y siempre hacía todo diversión.
When I was young, I went to my grandparents house. They had bought a new dishwasher. The dishwasher came in a very large cardboard box. My grandfather cut a door and window out of the cardboard box. I pretended the cardboard box was my house. I put my head through the window and said “Hello!” to my grandpa. I tried to move my head into the cardboard box but my head was stuck. I screamed and cried. My grandpa started to laugh. Using his knife he cut my head out. My grandpa was a funny man and always made everything fun.
Reflection
I learned that the Day of the Dead starts on the first of November and is celebrated in remembrance of loved ones who have passed away. People prepare food and create extravagant celebrations in order to honor the lives of their deceased family members. They create altars and place sentimental items on them as well as flowers, food, candles, etc.
In class we had the opportunity to create our own altar and experience part of the culture of Day of the Dead. It was an interesting experience and I enjoyed seeing what everyone else brought in to place on the altar. I enjoyed celebrating Day of the Dead because it was nice to remember our loved ones in a happier way rather than in a sad way.
I was proud of my art project. I really put a lot of time into it and I feel as though it represents the culture of Day of the Dead and my grandfather. It was difficult writing our paragraphs because we had to use past tense. Past tense in spanish is difficult because there is the preterite and imperfect tense. However, it was a good challenging and learning experience. Overall our Day of the Project was a success and I learned much about the holiday.
