I am thrilled to be interning at the Environmental Center at Fort Lewis College. Not only will I gain a better understanding about environmental science, I will also get a glimpse at college life.
The Environmental Center is dedicated to environmental sustainability and social justice on campus as well as off campus. There are several projects students are involved in such as the Zero-Waste project and the Local Food project. All of the projects are aimed towards trying to create a more environmentally friendly campus.
The Environmental Center has five core values. The first value is positive action. The Environmental Center believes positive action is the path to change. The second value is integrity. They believe the way we treat ourselves greatly reflects how we treat our environment. The next core value is connection. The Environmental Center believes creating connections between people and the species that inhabit earth with us is key to community. The next core value is creativity. The Environmental Center believes by unleashing the mind, creative solutions are born. The last core value is discovery. At the environmental center, not only are new facts and skills gained, people discover themselves.
Rachel Landis and Alex Brooks are full time coordinators at the Environmental Center, and help organize and find funding for the student driven projects the Environmental Center supports. While interning at the Environmental Center, I will be able to shadow Rachel and Alex and learn the behind the scenes work put into the student-driven projects and also learn what is like to work in a college setting. I will also have the opportunity to shadow a student who is part of one of the student teams. This will give me an inside glimpse of the work necessary to create a successful project.
I hope that after completing my internship with the Environmental Center, I will have a better understanding about whether or not I want to pursue a career in the environmental science field. I also want to apply the knowledge gained from this experience into my personal life by living a more environmentally conscious lifestyle.
One of my main goals is to create relationships with the people I will be shadowing and working with. I believe creating relationships is one of the most important aspects of life. I also want to be open-minded to the ideas of others while challenging some of my own pre-existing ideas.
For my project, I will be observing the habits of college students and attempting to find the root cause as to why the recycling bins in the student union are not being utilized. I also hope to find out why they are being contaminated when they are being used. This project will require me to use critical thinking in order to discover the problem, and then to create a solution to the problem.
I feel that if I can help solve this issue it will give me an insight as to how to address other environmental problems plaguing our society and possibly implement the findings I discover to help Animas High school become more environmentally friendly. This process will help me understand the work involved in discovering a problem, and in creating a viable solution to the problem in a timely and effective manner.
In order to find a solution to the recycling problem at the Student Union, I will have to be patient and observant. I will also have to use social skills and inquire as to why people are not recycling. I will need time to observe the actions of the students and, once I figure out the cause of the recycling problem, I will need time to create a solution.
During the first week of LINK, I will start to work on my project, but I will dive into my project the second and third week. I’m hoping to create a video of my project to present at our exhibition.
I am so excited to be interning with the Environmental Center, but the whole LINK process was not smooth sailing. I was so lost at the beginning of LINK and I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I wanted to intern. My mind was going a million different directions. When I learned that the Environmental Center was open to the idea of having an intern, I was thrilled. I’ve always been interested in environmental science however, I have never done anything to pursue this interest.
When I learned I was going to have a meeting with Rachel and Alex, I was so excited, yet nervous. Speaking in public and vocalizing my thoughts and ideas are not my strong points, so I was really worried about our meeting. However, all went well and I am interning in a positive, healthy, and thought provoking environment. While I initially was confused and apprehensive about LINK, I now feel confident and enthusiastic about this challenge.
